2014 WUC Poster Presentations

Overview

All posters are displayed at the Whitman Undergraduate Conference in a single, one-hour session.  海报主持人必须在会议期间随身携带他们的海报.  Posters will also be displayed as PDFs on the Undergraduate Conference website for remote viewing.

Format

Poster size: 42" x 31.5"

This size meets the requirements for most national conferences and works within the parameters of Technology Services' large-format printers.  它也足够大,可以在最复杂的演示中显示几乎所有元素.

Software

Templates vs. Custom Design

Organization

Keep all elements of a section close to one another, and place captions close to their graphics. Leave space between sections so that the viewer can make sense of the graphics and their corresponding captions.

Fonts

Color

Writing: Style Guides

Title

海报的标题应该与你在提案中使用的标题相匹配.  海报标题不要超过12个字. Put important words first.  Leave out unnecessary words. For example, “Investigation of Threshold Characteristics of Materials Fracture Under Impact Loads Produced by Pulsed Magnetic Fields” can be shortened to “Threshold Fractures Produced by Pulsed Magnetic Fields.”  Keep your title formal; be wary of making claims that the data doesn’t support. It is customary in the title section to put a logo from your institution and any other institution where you worked; the conference at which the poster is presented; and any sponsoring agency. (See Downloads for selected logos.) Full names of the authors and their affiliated institutions are listed directly below the title.

Objective / Introduction

Methods Section

Results Section

Conclusions Section

QR Code

A QR (Quick Response) code is often put in the lower right-hand corner of the poster with other contact information. 你不一定要使用二维码,但它会让你的工作更专业.

WUC QR Code

Working with Images

File Types

Use .tiff, .jpg or .png images.  Do not use PICT or EPS.

Graphs, Charts and Tables

Inserting Graphs from Excel

While it is possible to simply highlight the graph in your spreadsheet and copy and paste it into your poster, the process is rife with hazards. 相反,将您的图形转换为图像文件(a ".Png文件),然后插入 .png file into the poster. 这是在海报中放置图像的一种安全方法. How to make a .png file from an Excel graph:

  2. Choose "Save as Web Page." (Trust this.) You should already have a dedicated folder for all poster images; save graph(s) into that folder.
  3. An .htm file will appear, along with a folder with every chart in the entire workbook saved as separate .png files. You won’t use the .htm file, but keep it.
  4. Rename each .png file so you know what it is.

Illustrations and Photos

You should have a folder with photos of your project or images you’ve found from other sources. Crisp, sharp images are crucial. 参见下面的技巧来创建高质量的图像文件. (警告:大多数在线图片在质量上不适合大型海报.)

图像应该是~300 dpi(点每英寸). Anything less will appear fuzzy; anything larger will make the file size unwieldy.  See Image Resolution section below.

If you only have a hard copy of your illustration, you need to scan it to make an electronic file. 扫描仪可以在多媒体开发实验室找到.

  1. Scan as a TIFF file, not as a .jpg.
  2. Scan at 220-300 dpi.  See Image Resolution section below.

Using Images Found Online

Method 1:

After determining that an image will be sharp in enlarged format, insert it into the placeholder. Use the resizing handle on a corner of the image and hold down the shift key while you click-and-drag.  这样可以按比例放大图像,而不会失真.

Preview of Poster Layout

Poster Printing

Things to Know Before You Go

Paper

  • Matte paper: flat finish, $3/linear foot; when hung on a wall exposed to indoor light, it will fade in three months
  • Semi-gloss paper: shiny finish; $5/linear foot; when hung on a wall exposed to indoor light, 它会持续两三年才会褪色

Proofs

Transporting the File

Cost

Poster Display

A PDF file of your poster for display on the WUC website should be submitted on the same day that you get your poster printed.  Files can be stored in Google Drive for transfer and should be emailed to WUC Organizing Committee member Jenny Stratton (strattjm@zoloftbirthdefectlawyer.com).

Physical posters will be displayed at Cordiner Hall during the poster session of the conference (1-2 p.m.),也可以在惠特曼本科生大会的网站上找到pdf格式的文件.

You will be assigned a student coach in late March who will be able to help you think through these ideas.

Archiving Your Poster
